Our handmade antique mirrors have a natural and artistic finish, making each piece unique. Mirror antiquing, also known as distressed mirrors, is an important part of the design repertoire, transforming time and space. We offer multiple techniques to meet varying design requests. There are two distinctly different categories of Antique Mirrors. One has a decorative appearance while the other offers a more European style or realistic old world look and feel. Within each category are many styles to meet your requirements. Additionally, we welcome custom design requests.

Our Antiqued Mirrors are in homes, restaurants, casinos, on furniture and in hotels globally. We take pride in every custom Antique Mirror created and attention to detail is always our first and foremost concern.

Unfortunately many Antique Mirrors today are NOT HAND MADE, rather imported, mass-produced and machine made, which do not have an authentic old world look.  Please Beware. Also we do have antique mirror stock sheets available, if desired.

Mirror Resilvering

Each Antique mirror has its one unique look and feel, such as type of bevel, etching / engraving, shape, seeds/bubbles, waves and glass color. Many are irreplaceable heirlooms which long to be restored to their original reflective brilliance and luster. In order to accomplish this we remove the original tarnished reflective coating, clean the original glass and redeposit a fresh silver layer then seal the silver to protect the reflective coating. This process will give an Antique Mirror its original clarity and reflective brilliance it originally had.

Glass Silvering

Glass silvering / mirroring is accomplished by chemically depositing a unique silver solution on glass creating a high quality reflective surface. Since our process is hand crafted, we not only deposit clear silver (Mirror) on glass, we have the ability to create an Antique Mirror as well.

Design Considerations

ORIENTATION:

Install mirrorpane with the reflective surface facing the brightly lit subject-side. Due to improved properties, this glass allows a wall to be completely glazed from floor to ceiling when there is no lighting on the viewing side.

TYPE OF LIGHTING:

Subject-side lighting should be bright and evenly distributed over all walls and furnishings, but should not shine directly onto the transparent mirror. Observer-side lighting should be dim with no open light sources. Opaque lamp shades are recommended for best results.

BACKGROUND COLORS:

Subject-side should be bright and light in color and shade to create a bright reflected image. Observer- side décor should be subdued, non-reflective, dark and uniform.

DISTANCES AND LIGHT LEVELS:

On the observer-side, keep people, objects and light sources at a distance from the transparent mirror area. An 8:1 light ratio is recommended, with the subject-side brightly lit.

CLEANING:

Use standard glass cleaners or mild detergents. Do not use abrasives, opaque liquid cleaners, razor blades or acid-based cleaners.

Beveling

This is the production, by abrasion, of a sloping edge on the glass sheet which is commonly used on mirror glass. The finished look can really enhance the overall appearance of any project that uses glass or mirror.

Edgeing

This is the shaping or finishing of the edges of a glass surface, usually by grinding with an abrasive wheel. Pencil Polished edge in a Satin finish (also available in clear finish) is the most common type of edgework on mirrors. Although this is not as common on mirrors as it is on glass.

This is the shaping or finishing of the edges of a glass surface, usually by grinding with an abrasive wheel.  Beveled Glass is usually made by taking thick glass and creating an angled surface cut (bevel) around the entire periphery.  Bevels act as prisms in the sunlight creating an interesting color diffraction which both highlights the glass work and provides a spectrum of colors which would ordinarily be absent in clear float glass.  Beveled Glass can be obtained as clusters which are arranged to create a specific design.  These can vary from simple three or four piece designs, often used in top lights (commonly known as transoms) of windows and conservatories, to more complex combinations of many pieces, suitable for larger panels such as doors and side screens (known in the door industry as sidelites).

Another good design option is to apply beveling to cabinet glass and glass shelves. They are increasingly popular home design options for homeowners interested in updating their home décor, due in part to their superior ability to make a room appear lighter and feel larger.  Beveled glass cabinet doors and beveled glass shelves offer visual appeal without inhibiting the light flowing through them, or obscuring the view of the pieces displayed within the cabinet.  Beveled glass has also been used with clear and colored textured glass to create designs.

Textured glass is typically 1/8″ thick and has a distinct visible texture.  Beveled glass is typical made from 1/4″ float plate glass but thicknesses up to 1/2″ have been used for larger windows.  The width of the bevel also can vary depending on the desired effect.  The combination of beveled glass is juxtaposed to the textured glass creating dramatic visual effects.

Beveled glass has many uses.  It is used in doors, mirrors and furniture.  Its use on doors is common and where a door may have an intricate design etched or cut on it by adding a plain bevel to the edge it leaves an attractive finish all round.  Many mirrors are surrounded by ornamental framework.  By the addition of a bevel to the periphery of a mirror it adds detail and can eliminate the need for any further ornamentation.

Glass tables have recently become very popular.  They can create a feeling of space in a room.  Many have a beveled edge as a design feature.  With the addition of clever lighting or a few candles the light will be reflected off the glass creating a spectrum of colors which would be absent if the glass was square cut.

In the glass world  hand beveling is an age old process which grinds away the edge of the glass to produce a chamfered or decorative finish.  Producing Hand Beveled Glass requires much time, starting from roughing out the pieces on a diamond wheel and proceeding through several steps to a high polish.  But, the result is worth it.

Mirror resilvering is a vanishing art, with only a handful of people in the United States who still know how to do re-silvering. Bear Glass is one of these.  Resilvering and restoring your antique mirror is our specialty.

One of the most common practices in saving a mirror is by resilvering.  Bear Glass can assist you with this when your mirrors are in need of restoring; antique or otherwise.

The easiest way to tell if your mirror needs resilvering is if it appears to have streaking or  dirty even after it has just been cleaned.  This is the actual breakdown of the old silver on the back of the glass.  Resilvering is used to restore the brilliance to the mirrored glass.

It is a common misinterpretation that you can buy an at home kit to repair these spots or certain areas on mirrors.  It will not look right without having the entire mirror resilvered.  Bear Glass specializes in resilvering to make sure that the finished result is perfect and stunning.

Before deciding to resilver your mirror, clean it thoroughly. Check its physical conditions for scratches, chips, cracks and pits. These imperfections are a sign of age and will become more visible due to the mirror’s new brilliance and clarity. They will not detract from its value, but rather be evidence of age or integrity of your treasured item.

If you have a mirror of sentimental value, a specialty mirror such as an antique car mirror or convex mirror, we will be more than happy to resilver them as well. If you design your own furniture and need colored glass mirrors (smoke, cobalt blue, etc…) or prefer the ‘distressed look’ to create that unique affect we can also custom make new mirrors.

The process of resilvering is very simple.  We begin by stripping the backing paint from the mirror.  We then use an acid to remove the deteriorated silver.  The remaining glass is polished and rinsed.  At this point, it is ready to be resilvered.  Using a special spray gun with several chemicals, the solution is applied.  Due to a chemical reaction, the silver then adheres to the glass.  The finished mirror is then dried and covered with a special coating.  After a final cleanup the mirror is completely refinished to perfection and is ready for pickup by the customer.
