Clear or Low-Iron Glass

• Clear (tinged with green) 3/8-inch glass is one basic consideration. However, it’s not a good fit for many decors. For a look that doesn’t conflict with your color palette, consider low-iron glass. It’s “water clear” to blend with any color palette. If you are concerned about upkeep with a clear or low-iron glass, look into Shower Guard glass from Guardian Industries. It permanently repels water spots and hard-water stains—no more squeegee after every shower.

Sandblasted, Bronze or Smoke Glass

There are so many different vessel sinks available. If your bathroom space has a sandblasted glass door, or a bronze or smoke glass vessel selected for your bath space, you can coordinate 3/8-inch acid-etched, bronze or smoke glass for your shower for a simple, elegant look that provides privacy as well.

Textured Glass

• Add interest to your frameless shower with textured glass. This is 3/8-inch cast glass from sources like Pilkington. Master Carre, Stippolyte, Rain, Solar Rain (water clear), Storm, Glue Chip and Machine Antique (water clear) are all available in 3/8-inch thickness. Although you can view these online, you will want to see them in person at a local glass supplier to get a good feel for their pattern, obscurity and light transmission.

Etched-Look Glass

Etched glass brings beautiful patterns to glass. However, it really is not practical for an application exposed to soap, shampoo, conditioners and the oil in your skin. DecoTherm can put a butterfly into the center of your door or a field of flowers up to your neck with a ceramic frit process that emulates etched glass.

Stained Glass Overlay Glass

• The look of stained glass is not out of reach for a frameless shower, when you look at Stained Glass Overlay. Mylar film in colors and textures, lead, bevels and jewels are applied to 3/8-inch tempered clear glass. The color and design possibilities are virtually endless. At the same time, any design can be modified for your bathroom window.

Fused, Beveled and Jewel-Accented Glass

• Details make a difference. Perhaps you shopped all over for fused glass tiles to accent a vanity area, wall sconces trimmed with little jewels or a hanging chandelier with teardrop bevels. Fused glass tiles, jewels and bevels can all be added to a frameless shower using ultraviolet (UV) tech adhesives and a UV curing light.

Kiln-Formed Art Glass

• Kiln-formed art glass is yet another beautiful option. A sheet of 3/8-inch clear or low-iron glass is melted over a form to create a rich, embossed pattern. A city skyline, waves, swirls, bubbles and flowers are among hundreds of design possibilities using kiln-formed art glass.

As we are working more with glass shower enclosures, we’ve been noticing some trends in custom shower enclosure design. When we say “custom” these are completely custom designs with unique panel sizes made exclusively for a space. They can certainly also be for project work – for instance where many of the same design are made for hospitality,…but the designs are unique and are definitely not “off the rack” from a home improvement warehouse. Generally, these doors are 3/8″ or 1/2″ thick tempered glass with fabrication for specialized hinges, handles and hardware. Acid etched Glass Shower Enclosure:

This translucent glass is available in low-iron versions that have a milky-white appearance that is soothing and ethereal for the bath. It also allows for privacy while still offering all the easy-to-clean advantages of other glass showers. And because it is permanently etched on one surface (usually placed facing the outside of the shower), the effect will never fade, clean off, or scratch off.

Tinted Glass Shower Door

Gray, bronze, and even blue tints are a nice look that are completely transparent but with just a hint of color to accent interior color schemes and adds a bit of the unexpected. This is not a film added to the glass, the tint is created in the actual float glass manufacturing process, so the color will stay true forever.

Bear Glass New Jersey Tempered Glass is made using special heated furnaces, which heat the annealed glass to a uniform temperature of approximately 1292 °F. When the glass exits the furnace, it is rapidly cooled. This rapid cooling puts the glass surface into a state of compression while the centre core remains in tension.

THERMAL TEMPERING

Tempering Process:
Bear Glass New Jersey Tempered Glass is made by uniformly heating annealed glass to a temperature of up to 1292 °F a nd immediately cooling it. The glass first goes through the furnace, carried in by rollers, where it is heated using three modes – conduction, convection and radiation. The rollers conduct the heat, while the coils help in the radiation of heat. The convection effect is brought about by hot air blowing through the nozzles, thus circulating the heat inside the furnace and making sure that the glass is heated evenly on all sides. This super heated glass then undergoes a rapid cooling process by a uniform and simultaneous blast of air on both surfaces.

After tempering, the stress pattern developed by the glass is high, and the mechanical strength of tempered glass is four to five times higher than that of annealed glass.

When tempered glass is broken, all the stored energy is released at once and the glass breaks into small pieces.

Characteristics of Bear Glass New Jersey Tempered Glass:

One problem that can also exist with tempered glass is spontaneous breakage, where the glass can break for no apparent reason. Spontaneous breakage occurs when nickel sulfide stones increase in size due to repeated heating and cooling.
