Bullet-Proof glass is an optically transparent material which is resistant to particular bullets and projectiles, keeping the people and objects on the other side of the glass safe from fatal attacks.

What is a bulletproof glass made of?

While a bullet resistant glass goes by the name of ‘bulletproof glass’ among the common folk, it is simply not possible to create a completely bulletproof glass which maintains its optical transparency and visibility even after an attack. Bulletproof glass is just a sandwich of few layers of glasses rendering it resistant from a bullet.

There are two types of bullet resistant glass:-

Solid Acrylic:- As the name suggests, solid acrylic bullet resistant glass is a material made up of a solid acrylic layer of either 1-1/4” or 1-3/8” layer thickness, depending upon the level of protection needed.

Laminated Polycarbonate: – A laminated polycarbonate bulletproof glass is made by sandwiching a layer of polycarbonate, a clear heavy duty plastic. The layers are then laminated together. While the exterior layers of glass shatter due to the oncoming bullet, the interior layers absorb the bullet’s energy and stops it from penetrating the whole piece of glass.

The latest form of bullet resistant glass is one-way bulletproof glass, made by laminating two layers, brittle glass, and polycarbonate. This type of bullet resistant glass is commonly used in armored vehicles. The threat side of the glass, the side facing the bullets has brittle glass. When a glass suffers a bullet attack, the brittle glass breaks on the interior, towards the polycarbonate layer. The event of glass breaking absorbs some of the energy of the striking bullet and spreads it over the second layer. Finally, the flexible polycarbonate layer stops the bullet to save your life. It is important to mention that the quality of bulletproof glass can vary, and we deliver them according to the choice and preferences of the customers.

This causes the brittle outer layer to break outwards, allowing the bullet to pass through.

Q: Is re-silvering needed?

A: Sometimes mirrors appear to be dirty or streaked on the front surface. The silvering on the back has no problem. So clean the mirror surface properly to check that it has no damage on the front surface.

Q: Is it possible to re-silver a small portion of the mirror?

A: Yes, it is possible to re-silver a portion of your mirror to re-silver. Unfortunately, satisfactory results are not guaranteed and are not always achieved by doing so. If you want the best result a complete re-silvering of the mirror is recommended.

Q: How long does Re-silvering last?

A: The re-silvering should last for decades. However, we can’t control the conditions in which mirrors are hung or mounted. Bathroom mirrors or other mirrors subject to excessive moisture has higher chances of getting disturbed quicker than mirrors in the bed room or other places.

Q: What is used to silver the surface of the mirror?

A: In Earlier mirror making silver was used to coat the glass surface. But in more recent times sputtering powdered aluminum or other compounds have been used in the place of silver. Therefore today, this process is also known as aluminizing. Which makes this service more cost effective.

Q: What if the edge of the m irror has Deterioration?

A: This is very common, frequently occurring on bathroom mirrors where moisture has puddled on the edges. It might not have been installed or sealed properly in the first place. If the mirror is large simple rectangle without bevels it will be cheaper to buy a new mirror than to have it re-silvered. One solution for the problem is to cut off the damaged area and then remount the mirror. Bear Glass also provides mirror cutting services for any thickness.

Q: Does Silver Paint touch up works as re-silvering?

A: No, It doesn’t. Using paint for re-silvering a mirror will get disappointing results. Mirror re-silvering process does involve many steps and techniques that is not possible at home unless you have the proper knowledge.

Bevel-Rite was a custom fabricator of mirror and plate glass that was located at 501 Prospect St. Unit 110  Lakewood, NJ 08701. In September 1980, they were the first beveling company in the the state of New Jersey and had grown to be a leading source to the glass and mirror industry.

Unfortunately because Bevelrite closed they’re doors this past year and their customers were left with few alternatives.
